Summary
Myanmar military raided Let Kar village in Mrauk-U on 10th April 2019, detaining 27 villagers for questioning on their alleged association with the Arakan Army. By April 22nd, three of the men had died, with a military-owned newspaper attributing this to ‘heart failure’. While the other 24 detainees remained in custody and were taken to Sittwe police station, the bodies of the three victims were transferred to Sittwe hospital and then cremated at Sittwe cemetery without the families’ permission. The families were also not allowed to see the bodies beforehand, raising suspicions of torture. Whether or when the other detainees were released is not known.
