On September 19 2025, at 5am local time, during scheduled dawn prayers (Fajr), a drone strike by the RSF was carried out on the Al-Safiya mosque and surrounding homes. The strike destroyed the mosque, leaving the bodies of victims buried under the rubble. Eyewitnesses describe a drone, launched from an RSF controlled area, firing two missiles at the site. Many affected by the strike had recently fled from the Abu Shouk camp for people displaced by the conflict as it was attacked by RSF forces the month prior.
UNICEF reported that at least 11 of the victims were children.
